Intense rainfall, hailstorm hit Karachi; more rain predicted

KARACHI: Intense rainfall, coupled with hailstorms, swept through various areas of Karachi, transforming the atmosphere into a refreshing scene but simultaneously sparking concerns about potential urban flooding.

Forecasts from the Meteorological Department indicate further rain in the hours ahead due to the development of a robust weather system over the city. Residents, particularly those in low-lying regions, have been advised to adopt precautionary measures.

Among the areas affected by intense rain and hail were Nazimabad and Gulistan-e-Jauhar, where thunder was also noted. Additional rainfall occurred in Mauripur, SITE Area, Musharraf Colony, Liaquatabad, North Karachi, Surjani Town, Manghopir, and Buffer Zone. Meanwhile, lighter showers fell across multiple sections of the city, amplifying the pleasant weather conditions.

The Meteorological Department reports that a rain system is actively emerging around Karachi. A substantial rain stream has formed approximately 100 kilometers southwest of the city, with radar tracking clouds steadily approaching, expected to bring further downpours to numerous neighborhoods.

Authorities have issued warnings that rainfall intensity might escalate within a short period.

Persistent heavy rain across several areas has raised fears of water accumulation in low-lying parts of the city. Officials have advised citizens to exercise caution and refrain from unnecessary travel amidst periods of heavy precipitation.

Although the rain has offered relief from elevated temperatures and enhanced the overall climate, government agencies remain vigilant as the intensifying rain system continues to unfold.
