International literacy Day is Being Observed Today

Web Desk (September 08, 2018): International literacy day is being observed today across the World, including Pakistan, which aims to raise people’s awareness and concern for literacy issues in the world.

International Literacy Day is celebrated annually worldwide and brings together governments, multi- and bilateral organizations, NGOs, private sectors, communities, teachers, learners and experts in the field.

‘Literacy and skills development’ is the global theme this year which aims to promote awareness of the importance and relevance of literacy and adult learning.

International Literacy Day highlights the importance of literacy in areas such as health and education.Activities such as letters to the editor in newspapers, as well as news reports about the concerns for low literacy levels, have occurred as a result of this increased awareness.

Other activities include literacy day projects, particularly with regard to technology and literature, which are promoted by various organizations including reading associations.The International Literacy Day is being celebrated throughout the world marking the 52nd anniversary of the World Congress of Ministers of Education on the Eradication of Illiteracy, held in Tehran, Iran in 1965.

Following the Tehran recommendation, UNESCO proclaimed September 8 as the International Literacy Day.According to UNESCO report, about 774 million adults lack the minimum literacy skills. One in five adults is still not literate and two-thirds of them are women.
