Interpol arrest key accused in Baldia factory fire case in Thailand

BANGKOK: Interpol arrested Abdul Rehman alias Bhola, the key accused in Baldia factory fire case, in the wee hours of Saturday from a hotel in Thailand.

Sources said Abdul Rehman alias Bhola is likely to be shifted to Pakistan within 24 hours and will be produced before the court on December 19.

It is pertinent to mention here that over 250 workers were burnt alive in a devastating fire at multi-story garment factory building in Karachi’s Baldia Town in September 2012. Rizwan Qureshi, a political worker and was arrested in an illicit weapon case in june 2013, exposed that the factory was set on fire as its owners failed to pay extortion.

Investigating officer SP Sajid Sadozai submitted a progress report before the Additional District and Sessions Judge (West) Maqbool Memon in March 2016. The report said that the factory fire was planned terrorist activity involving some key member of MQM over nonpayment of extortion money. It was further said that it was an act of arson and the miscreants used some highly creative chemicals to set the factory on fire.

The report alleged that former Chief of MQM Karachi Tanzeemi Committee Hammad Siddiqui asked Abdul Rehman alias Bhola the then sector in-charge of the party in Baldia Town to set the factory on fire in order to teach the owners a lesson. Zubair alias Charya, an employee of the factory who was affiliated with the party along with his four accomplices set the factory on fire by throwing some chemicals in the warehouse located in the basement.
