Int’l Day of UN Peacekeepers being observed today

Web Desk: The International Day of UN Peacekeepers is being observed today to highlight role of UN peacekeeping forces for world peace.

The day commemorates the efforts of the United Nations to eliminate human suffering by establishing a situation of lasting peace in countries with wars and internal conflicts.

Over 2,800 Pakistan’s military and police personnel contribute to UN peacekeeping operations in African countries, ranking 5th in uniformed personnel.

In his message on the day, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment and support for all efforts aimed at strengthening UN peacekeeping missions.

He mentioned that more than 235000 thousand Pakistani peacekeepers have served with distinction in48 missions across the globe in the seven-decade-long history of United Nations peacekeeping missions.

181 Pakistani peacekeepers have made the ultimate sacrifice in the cause of international peace and security.

Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan also hosts the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), one of the oldest UN peacekeeping missions. Its mandate is to monitor the ceasefire along the Line of Control in the UN-recognized disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Moreover, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar in his message on the UN Peacekeepers, has said Pakistan has been and will continue to uphold its strong commitment towards UN Peacekeeping as a vital tool for a peaceful, stable and prosperous world.

He said that at a time when the world is facing multifaceted threats, the UN Peacekeeping remains one of the most reliable and cost-effective instruments for maintaining international peace and security.

The Deputy Prime Minister said emphasized the need for a renewed political commitment to adapt the UN Peacekeeping to address the contemporary and future challenges, including through technological innovation and strengthening regional partnerships.
