WEB DESK: In a recent move, Iranian authorities have seized hundreds of Starlink satellite internet devices, escalating their efforts to control online access amid ongoing unrest.
Last week, Iran drastically limited internet services nationwide to suppress violent protests, cutting off most connections and restricting communication channels like calls and texts. Reports suggest that only government entities, state media, and regime allies maintain full internet access during this period.
After shutting down much of the internet, Elon Musk, CEO of Starlink, offered free satellite internet services to Iranians. Despite this, Iranian officials launched a crackdown on Starlink equipment, confiscating large numbers of the devices.
Sources reveal that many Starlink terminals, which are illegal under Iranian law, have been clandestinely smuggled into the country. These devices gained popularity following the protests of 2022, providing Iranians with alternative means of communication amidst restrictions.
