TEHRAN: Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed that its air defence systems shot down a third Israeli F-16 fighter jet over central Iran, marking another escalation in the ongoing confrontation involving the United States and Israel.
In a statement issued early Saturday, the IRGC’s aerospace division said the aircraft was targeted at around 3:45am local time using advanced defence systems. Officials described the action as evidence of Iran’s ability to protect its airspace.
There has been no independent confirmation of the claim, and Israel has yet to respond publicly. The status of the pilot and aircraft remains unclear.
Escalating Air Conflict
The aerial conflict has intensified since late February, when a large-scale operation reportedly involving around 200 Israeli warplanes including F-16 Fighting Falcon struck multiple targets across Iran. Thestrikes were linked to rising tensions over Tehran’s nuclear programme and its regional activities.
Since then, Iranian forces have reported engaging several aircraft and drones, though such claims are difficult to verify independently during active hostilities.
Rising Regional Tensions
The conflict has led to mounting losses and heightened instability across the region, with damage reported to key military assets on both sides. Concerns have also grown over the security of vital energy routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz.
Analysts warn that the expanding air battles reflect a shift toward more technologically advanced warfare, increasing the risk of a broader escalation as all sides compete for control of contested airspace.
