WEB DESK: Iran has qualified for the Men’s FIFA World Cup scheduled for next year.

Iran secured their spot in the 2026 World Cup, becoming the second Asian nation to qualify, after an intense 2-2 draw against Uzbekistan in Tehran on Tuesday.

This result not only confirmed their place in the tournament hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico but also raised potential diplomatic concerns for the organizers.

As the second-highest ranked Asian Football Confederation (AFC) team according to FIFA standings, Iran only needed a single point to join Japan in the World Cup lineup.

Despite facing pressure from a determined Uzbekistan squad, they managed to equalize twice, with Mehdi Taremi netting both goals, including a crucial strike in the dying minutes of the match.

“We have to thank the fans who filled the stadium today, and thank God they did not leave empty-handed,” said Iran captain Alireza Jahanbakhsh.
