TEHRAN: Iran announced on Sunday that recent negotiations with Oman over the management of the Strait of Hormuz had yielded positive progress, with discussions centered on maritime security and the sovereign rights of both countries.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said Iranian and Omani deputy foreign ministers met in Tehran on Friday and Saturday for several rounds of talks. The meetings focused on establishing shared principles and practical mechanisms to ensure the safe movement of vessels through the strategically important waterway while safeguarding the interests of both nations.
Baqaei described the discussions as productive, noting that advances had been made and that technical as well as political consultations would continue.
The Strait of Hormuz, bordered by Iran and Oman, is one of the world’s most critical shipping routes for global oil and gas exports.
The latest diplomatic engagement follows renewed tensions after the United States resumed military operations against Iran despite a memorandum of understanding reached in June that had briefly reduced hostilities.
Earlier discussions between Tehran and Muscat included the possibility of introducing service fees for ships using the strait, a proposal opposed by Washington. Oman also indicated that vessels could pass through its territorial waters, a position that drew criticism from Iran and contributed to heightened tensions.
Baqaei also stated that Iran had not detected any fresh US attacks after nearly two weeks of military strikes.
Meanwhile, Axios reported that the Pentagon had presented US President Donald Trump with plans for another night of strikes, but he reportedly chose not to approve them, opting instead to allow renewed diplomatic efforts. According to the report, the decision came after an Omani delegation arrived in Tehran for discussions on a possible framework for keeping the Strait of Hormuz open.
Addressing another question, Baqaei said there had been no change in commercial shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz.
