TEHRAN: Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has said his country is not seeking war with the United States or Israel, but made it clear that any attacks on Iran will not go unanswered.
In a written message broadcast on state television, Khamenei stressed that Tehran has no intention of escalating conflict. “We did not start this war, nor do we desire it,” he said, while reaffirming that Iran would defend its sovereignty and rights under all circumstances.
He emphasized that Iran would stand firm alongside its regional allies, often referred to as the “resistance front,” in an apparent reference to ongoing tensions involving Lebanon and groups such as Hezbollah.
At the same time, Khamenei issued a strong warning, stating that those responsible for attacks on Iran would face consequences. “We will not allow criminal aggressors to escape punishment,” he declared.
His remarks come shortly after Iran agreed to a fragile two-week ceasefire with the United States, raising cautious hopes for potential diplomatic talks following weeks of heightened tensions and threats from Donald Trump.
Khamenei also urged neighboring countries in the Gulf region to closely monitor developments, describing the current situation as a critical turning point. He revealed that Iran plans to shift its management strategy regarding the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Addressing the Iranian public, the supreme leader encouraged continued civic engagement despite the ceasefire, noting that public presence and opinion could influence the direction of upcoming negotiations.
Mojtaba Khamenei, who assumed leadership after the death of his father Ali Khamenei in late February, has yet to appear publicly. Iranian media report that he is recovering from injuries sustained during the attack that killed his father, while speculation about his condition continues abroad.
