Iran strikes near Israel’s dimona nuclear site, downs F-16 claim; 6 dead, 100 injured

TEHRAN: A sharp escalation between Iran and Israel unfolded on Sunday, as Iran launched a large-scale missile assault targeting Israeli positions, including a site near Dimona in the Negev desert, following earlier Israeli strikes on Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility.

According to reports, the Iranian attack involved multiple missiles, some carrying cluster warheads, resulting in at least six fatalities, over 100 injuries, and damage to around 20 structures. Several locations in central Israel were hit, while the southern city of Arad also suffered casualties, with dozens reported injured.

Israeli authorities responded by shutting down schools nationwide and placing emergency services on high alert amid fears of further attacks. Health officials indicated that thousands have been affected since the latest phase of hostilities began.

Earlier in the day, Israeli forces carried out airstrikes inside Iran, targeting facilities linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including missile production and storage sites. Footage released by the Israeli military showed strikes on ballistic missile infrastructure in western Iran.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that no abnormal radiation levels were detected following the strike on the Natanz facility, while Russia strongly condemned the Israeli action and called for restraint.

Amid the ongoing conflict, Iran claimed it had downed an Israeli F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jet. Israeli officials acknowledged the aircraft had been targeted but stated it was not damaged.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced the start of a new operational phase, asserting that Iran’s advanced missile systems now have extended reach. The group warned that further strikes would continue, particularly targeting southern Israeli areas, and claimed its latest strategy would surprise both U.S. and Israeli military leadership.

The situation remains highly volatile, with both sides signaling readiness for continued confrontation.
