ISLAMABAD: Senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senator Irfan Siddiqui has passed away following a two-week treatment period at a private hospital in Islamabad.
Irfan Siddiqui, a prominent figure within the PML-N, served as the parliamentary leader in the Senate and was regarded as a close confidant of the party president and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. His death has been met with an outpouring of grief from political and intellectual circles across the country.
Born in Rawalpindi, Punjab, in 1946, Siddiqui made significant contributions to journalism, political leadership, and public service. Since March 2021, he had represented Punjab in the Senate and chaired the Senate’s Foreign Affairs Committee, actively working towards fostering democratic resilience and balanced diplomacy.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has conveyed his profound grief over Senator Irfan Siddiqui’s passing. Expressing his sorrow, the Prime Minister remarked that Siddiqui’s death is a monumental loss for Pakistan, describing him as a principled intellectual, teacher, and thinker.
Shehbaz Sharif prayed for Siddiqui’s eternal peace, asking Allah Almighty to grant him a place in Jannat-ul-Firdous and provide solace and strength to his family in this difficult time.
President Asif Ali Zardari also extended his condolences, expressing sorrow over Siddiqui’s passing. He recognized Siddiqui’s unparalleled contributions to democracy in Pakistan and prayed for the departed soul while wishing strength and patience to his family.
Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi paid homage to Senator Siddiqui’s remarkable contributions to journalism and politics. Reflecting on his impactful career, Naqvi described Siddiqui as a professional par excellence whose legacy will remain alive. He offered prayers for Siddiqui’s elevated status in the afterlife and comfort for the mourning family.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also shared her condolences, lamenting Siddiqui’s demise as a tremendous loss for Pakistani politics. She remembered him as an esteemed statesman with dignified principles and unforgettable political traditions.
