Istanbul: Emergency Meeting of OIC Executive Committee Today

The Executive Committee of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation will hold an emergency meeting in Istanbul today to discuss the current situation of Masjid Al-Aqsa.

Foreign Ministers and senior officers of the 57-member pan-Islamic organization will attend the meeting.

A statement issued last week by the Jeddah-based OIC had called “The issue of the Al-Aqsa mosque is a red line.”

The meeting was held in the wake of installation of metal detectors at entrances to the highly sensitive east Jerusalem site, which includes Al-Aqsa mosque and the Dome of Rock, by Israeli authorities, following an attack on the 14th of this month that had left two Israeli policemen dead. Three Palestinians were also martyred.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will be flying to Istanbul, Turkey to take part in an extraordinary meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on the latest developments of Al-Quds.

Iran Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi announced Zarif’s plan to attend the OIC meeting and said, “The need for consultation and cooperation among Muslim countries is now felt more than ever in the wake of the recent developments in the occupied territories and the increased pressure on Palestinian people, particularly in Al-Quds.”

Islamic countries should never forget the fact that, despite certain disagreements, Palestine is the top priority of Muslim world, Qassemi had said yesterday.

The issue [of Palestine] will not be resolved unless the Islamic society (Ummah) maintains its unity and exerts pressure on the occupying regime of Israel,” he added.
