Kamala Harris makes quiet Met Gala debut as a surprise appearance

NEW YORK: Former Vice President Kamala Harris made an unexpected appearance at the prestigious Met Gala in New York City on Monday evening, accompanied by her husband, Doug Emhoff. Harris, who has maintained a relatively low public profile since the November election, attended the high-profile event wearing a custom black-and-white gown by the luxury label Off-White.

While the couple opted to bypass the traditional red carpet, photographs from ahead of the gala showcase Harris in an elegant silk silhouette featuring an asymmetrical cape sleeve and a long scarf. According to Off-White, the design was intended to evoke a sense of timelessness.

A spokesperson for Harris confirmed that, the former Vice President was invited to the Met Gala by Vogue editor-in-chief and event co-chair, Anna Wintour.

Harris’s attendance at the Met Gala comes just ahead of a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee. Her appearance at the fashion event is one of a limited number of high-profile engagements she has undertaken since the election loss. Recently, she has delivered speeches at the Leading Women Defined Summit and the Emerge Gala, the latter of which supports an organization dedicated to recruiting and training women for political office.

In both recent addresses, Harris has been critical of the current administration’s actions during its initial 100 days. At the Emerge Gala last Wednesday, she stated, “Instead of an administration working to advance America’s highest ideals, we are witnessing the wholesale abandonment of those ideals.” She also commended the public’s response, adding, “And what we are also seeing in these last 14 weeks is Americans using their voice and showing their courage.”

Harris’s appearance at the Met Gala adds a notable moment to her recent public engagements as she continues to speak out on current political issues and support Democratic initiatives.
