KARACHI: Karachi has confirmed its second monkeypox case, according to the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital’s medical superintendent.
A 22-year-old resident from Karachi’s Buffer Zone has tested positive for monkeypox. The hospital’s Medical Superintendent, Dr. Waheed Rajput, mentioned that the patient shows all typical symptoms but has no travel history.
This marks the second case in Karachi this year, with the first reported in January. Monkeypox is caused by the Mpox virus, with suspected reservoirs including African rodents and primates, though the exact source remains unknown.
Symptoms usually include a rash that appears 1 to 3 days after fever begins, starting on the face and spreading elsewhere. The rash goes through stages—macules, papules, vesicles, pustules, and scabs. Other signs can be headache, muscle pain, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes. The incubation period ranges from 5 to 21 days, with illness lasting 2 to 4 weeks.
