Karachi factory fire continues after over 32 hours

KARACHI: large-scale fire that erupted early Sunday morning at a factory in the Landhi Export Processing Zone remains partially active after more than 32 hours, officials confirmed on Monday.

The Fire Brigade reported that the blaze spread swiftly due to the presence of chemicals within the factory and the influence of strong winds, which caused the flames to extend to an adjacent clothing warehouse and a plastic manufacturing facility. Currently, approximately 70% of the fire has been brought under control, with firefighters optimistic about complete suppression soon.

Fire Officer Arif Mansoori explained that twelve fire trucks are actively engaged in the firefighting efforts. Despite significant progress, flames persist in multiple sections across all affected sites. The firefighting team continues to work tirelessly to fully extinguish the fire and prevent further damage.

While the risk of fire spreading to nearby areas has diminished, cooling operations are expected to continue for several more hours. The incident has resulted in the loss of valuable goods, with one factory completely destroyed and another deemed structurally unsafe due to damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Tragically, at least five firefighters sustained injuries while battling the blaze. Currently, over 20 fire tenders are on-site, working diligently to control the situation and prevent further escalation.
