KARACHI: Public transportation in Karachi is poised for a significant improvement as the Sindh government prepares to introduce double-decker buses and a new fleet of electric vehicles (EV) starting next week.
The announcement was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Sindh Senior Minister for Transport, Sharjeel Inam Memon, on Tuesday.
During the session, the minister was briefed on the progress of the Yellow Line and Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects. Sharjeel Memon expressed confidence that the double-decker buses and electric vehicles would arrive in Karachi by next week, facilitating an expansion of modern and eco-friendly transport solutions across the city.
New EV bus routes will be launched in tandem with the double-decker service, while electric taxis are slated to begin operations by December. Plans are also underway for an additional 500 buses under the People’s Bus Service, scheduled for deployment later this year.
Memon disclosed plans to introduce new People’s Bus Service routes in several other districts of Sindh, aiming to provide dependable and cost-effective transportation to a wider population. He directed transport authorities to accelerate preparations for these new routes to meet their implementation timelines.
To support women’s mobility and empowerment, the senior minister announced training programs designed to teach women and female students how to ride scooters.
Regarding the ongoing rapid transit developments, Memon remarked on the progress of the Yellow Line BRT project, calling for faster construction. He instructed contractors and officials to expedite efforts and complete the BRT depots promptly. Additionally, he stated that work on the second phase of the Taj Haider Bridge would commence soon.
