Karachi hotel fire: CM orders probe into Civil Defence Dept’s failure

KARACHI: Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah on Monday directed Home Department to investigate as to why the Civil Defence department did not carry out the mandatory inspection after every three month of the hotel.

On Monday, the Chief Minister chaired a high level meeting over the Regent Plaza fire. The chief minister was told during the briefing that the fire was extinguished very soon, however smoked filled in the room due to AC duct.

During the meeting it was revealed that the Civil Defence department did not carry out the mandatory quarterly inspection. Upon this the Chief Minister expressed his annoyance and ordered probe into it.

He directed the concerned authorities to ensure emergency exit and fire fighting equipment in each hotel, factory and high rises in the city.

He further directed the Local Bodies Minister to get third party ISO certified inspection. He also directed the authorities to buy fire fighters and shooters.

He directed Home Secretary Sindh to authorize Assistant Commissioner to carry out inspection.
