KARACHI: DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah has issued a firm warning to vehicle owners regarding tampering with license plates and attempting to bypass the city’s advanced AI-based e-challan system.
He emphasized that the traffic authorities are committed to taking strict action against offenders as part of their efforts to strengthen traffic law enforcement across Karachi. Tampering, scratching, or modifying number plates is considered a criminal offense, with arrests to be made in such cases. Vehicles found with fake or improperly transferred plates will be blacklisted in police and excise records, and legal proceedings will be initiated against the violators.
DIG Shah also addressed concerns over public reactions to the increased fines resulting from the digital enforcement system. He clarified that the primary aim is to change driving behaviors and improve road safety, not to generate revenue through penalties.
Highlighting the impact of the new measures, he noted that Karachi’s daily traffic fatalities have decreased from three to two since the implementation of smart enforcement. The department’s goal remains to further reduce accidents and enhance safety on roads.
Additionally, Shah mentioned that 11 Sahulat Centers across the city now provide first-time offenders with a one-time waiver to ensure the system remains both strict and equitable.
He concluded by stating that even with only partial coverage of smart cameras in Karachi, noticeable improvements in driving habits are already evident.
