Karachi police book PPP leader Aijaz Jakhrani’s brother in alleged drug case

KARACHI: Police have registered a narcotics case against Azad Jakhrani, brother of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Aijaz Jakhrani, following the alleged recovery of cocaine and crystal methamphetamine from a bungalow linked to him in Karachi.

According to police, the case was lodged at Darakhshan Police Station on behalf of the state under four provisions of anti-narcotics laws.

Police said the incident came to light when officers on routine patrol stopped a motorcyclist behaving suspiciously near the Clock Tower. A search allegedly led to the recovery of 18 boxes of cocaine and 41 packets of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as ice, concealed in a plastic bag.

The recovered cocaine weighed 62 grammes, while the crystal methamphetamine weighed 106 grammes, police said.

During questioning, the arrested suspect allegedly identified Azad Jakhrani as the owner of the drugs. He further claimed that narcotics supplied by Jakhrani had been collected from his bungalow.

Acting on the suspect’s statement, a police team took him to a property in Khayaban-e-Seher, where he allegedly pointed out a wooden cupboard containing additional narcotics.

Police said several shopping bags bearing a supermarket logo were found inside the cupboard. The bags reportedly contained multiple plastic-wrapped packets of crystal methamphetamine, along with another bag containing 32 boxes of cocaine.

A digital weighing scale and other items were also seized during the search, according to the police account.

Officials said the crystal methamphetamine recovered from the cupboard weighed more than one kilogramme, while the additional cocaine weighed 22 grammes.

Police further stated that the bungalow’s watchman told investigators that Jakhrani was abroad at the time.

The case has been registered under the relevant anti-narcotics provisions, and the allegations against Azad Jakhrani are based on the arrested suspect’s statement and the police investigation. The claims have not been independently verified.
