The deceased, identified as Khalid, died at 3 AM, the hospital’s management said, adding that the body has been handed over to the bereaved family. The argument with the assistant sub-inspector (ASI) took place in the jurisdiction of the Saddar police station and was reportedly over the grievance of the rickshaw-driver, who voiced his frustration over police officers charging fines and demanding bribes.

Separately, Karachi police chief Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh, while visiting Khalid in the Civil Hospital, had earlier said no rickshaw-driver in the city would be fined more than Rs150.“For the next one week, motorcyclists would be fined for nothing except driving the wrong way,” he stated, adding that he would pay in the stead should a rickshaw-driver be unable to pay the fine.
