Karachi traffice police cheif removed amid rising complaints

KARACHI: Peer Muhammad Shah has been relieved of his duties as Karachi’s traffic police chief following mounting traffic issues, administrative shortcomings, and growing public discontent in the city. Mazhar Nawaz Sheikh has been named as his successor, taking charge as the new Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Traffic Karachi.

Reports indicate that this move was driven by widespread dissatisfaction among residents and the city’s ongoing struggles with traffic management. Mazhar Nawaz Sheikh, a senior officer holding a grade 20 rank, has been directed to assume his new role immediately.

During Shah’s tenure, efforts such as the launch of the E-Challan system and initiatives under the Karachi Safe City project were introduced. He had taken up the post in February 2025.

The newly appointed DIG has been entrusted with the responsibility of enhancing the traffic system and ensuring stringent enforcement of traffic regulations. Police officials have hinted at additional measures in the coming days aimed at improving Karachi’s traffic flow.
