Karachi tyre warehouse fire extinguished after 21 hours of intense efforts

KARACHI: A large-scale fire that broke out at a tyre storage facility in Moach Goth has been successfully controlled after a prolonged firefighting operation lasting 21 hours.

The fire, which started Thursday afternoon, was classified as a third-degree blaze due to its severity and the highly flammable materials involved, including rubber, oil, and carbon. Initial reports indicated the flames persisted for more than a day, but officials confirmed that the fire was finally subdued after nearly a full day of continuous efforts.

Over a dozen fire engines, including units from Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and Rescue 1122, participated in the extensive firefighting operation. Challenges such as the presence of combustible substances, unpaved access routes, and surrounding dense vegetation hampered efforts to contain the blaze.

While no casualties were reported, the fire caused extensive material damage, destroying goods valued in millions of rupees. Approximately 80% of the warehouse’s inventory was consumed by the flames, though rescue teams managed to salvage about 20% of the stored materials.

The thick, black smoke from the fire posed environmental hazards, prompting concerns among local residents. Authorities are currently cooling the affected area and will conduct an investigation to determine the fire’s cause.
