KARACHI: The city of Quaid witnessed surge in street crime, Karachi Police apprehended a couple for alleged motorcycle theft.
Karachi has witnessed a troubling rise in street crime, with recent reports highlighting an increase in motorcycle thefts. In a significant development, the Karachi Police have arrested a couple allegedly involved in a series of motorcycle snatching incidents. Authorities claim to have recovered firearms and cash from their possession.
The arrest was made by the SITE Super Highway police after receiving a tip-off about the couple’s criminal activities. According to SSP East Farukh Raza, the suspects had been using firearms to steal motorcycles in the East District and Keamari areas of Karachi. Following an operation, police successfully apprehended the couple and registered a case against them, with further investigations ongoing.
Earlier this month, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ghulam Nabi Memon acknowledged the growing concerns over street crime in Karachi, including kidnapping-for-ransom cases in the riverine areas of Sindh. He admitted that these incidents had led to a public perception that law enforcement agencies were struggling to maintain order. During a press conference, Memon emphasized the importance of public cooperation, stating that the police could only succeed in their efforts with the support of the community.
The IGP also noted the persistent challenges posed by Karachi’s large population, the presence of repeat offenders, and the prevalence of drug addiction, all of which continue to fuel street crimes. Despite these difficulties, the police remain committed to addressing the rising tide of criminal activity in the city.
