Kashmiris observe black day to mark October 27, 1947, Indian troop invasion

MUZAFFARABAD: Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) and across the world are observing Black Day on Tuesday to highlight the unresolved Jammu and Kashmir dispute and draw international attention to what they describe as India’s continued illegal occupation of the territory.

According to Kashmir Media Service, October 27 marks the day in 1947 when Indian troops entered Jammu and Kashmir, an action that Kashmiris and their leaders say violated the partition plan and disregarded the wishes of the local population.

The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), in a statement issued in Srinagar, called on Kashmiris in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and abroad to observe the day. It also appealed for a complete shutdown in the occupied territory.

The APHC leadership urged the international community to help resolve the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the aspirations of the Kashmiri people and relevant United Nations resolutions.

In Azad Jammu and Kashmir, protest rallies and seminars are scheduled across district and tehsil headquarters to condemn the events of October 27, 1947, as well as India’s revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status on August 5, 2019, under the BJP-led government.

On the directives of the AJK president and prime minister, deputy commissioners will lead demonstrations in their respective districts.

In Muzaffarabad, the Kashmir Liberation Cell has organised a protest demonstration followed by a rally. AJK Prime Minister Iftikhar Gilani is scheduled to lead the gathering.

Pasban-e-Hurriyat Jammu and Kashmir, Kashmiri refugee organisations, other Hurriyat groups and various political and religious parties have also arranged rallies and seminars to mark the occasion and express opposition to Indian rule in the disputed territory.
