Kuwait plans to close private schools in residential areas

WEB DESK: Kuwait has unveiled plans to close all private schools operating within residential areas by the end of 2028.

This decision stems from growing concerns regarding urban planning, increased traffic congestion, and the overall quality of life for residents in densely populated neighborhoods.

The initiative was approved by Abdul Latif Al Mishari, Kuwait’s Minister for State Affairs, following a resolution passed by the Municipal Council. According to the new directive, private schools will no longer be allowed to function from residential zones, signaling a significant shift in the nation’s approach to integrating educational facilities into urban settings.

As part of the updated regulations, Al Mishari also introduced stricter requirements for future school projects. Land designated for the construction of private schools must first secure prior approval from the General Traffic Department. Developers will be required to present a comprehensive traffic impact analysis, sanctioned by the relevant authorities, to minimize congestion in surrounding neighborhoods.

This measure addresses long-standing complaints from residents about traffic jams, noise pollution, and safety issues caused by schools situated in residential districts—a growing challenge as Kuwait’s urban areas continue to expand rapidly.

Kuwait is a nation situated in West Asia at the northern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, bordering Iraq to the north and Saudi Arabia to the south, with its coastline facing the Persian Gulf.
