Karachi: Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) in collabaration with United Nation International Children Education Fund (UNICEF) and Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) is adding sodium hypocholorite in different pumping stations around Karachi to cop up the incidences of vibrio cholera and other pathogenic bacterial infections that cause severe and acute cholera.
According to PCRWR, the initiative has been taken after a report published in July this year in the English daily of the country that revealed hundreds of Karachiites across the city suffered gastroenteritis which also caused death of a lady in Sheedy Goth of Malir owing to consumption of contaminated water and food.
While it was also reported that as many as 4200 people visited hospital due to out break of cholera during one week time.
Over which PCRWR started action to stop the cholera out break and contacted to the UNICEF for provision of chlorine solution ( Sodium hypochlorite) liquid form which is known as bleach.
The UNICEF being kind agreed to provide the chlorine solution with chlorine concentration of 12 to 16 percent for disinfection of supply water for possible cholera out break response.

It is also certified that the UNICEF is providing five Lakh Kgs of sodium chlorite with concentration of 12% to 15% for duration of three months. Chlorine solution produced by M\S Engro polymers and chemicals.
As per KWSC chlorine solution will be added in 17 pumping stations in Karachi.

Moreover the PCRWR will monitor all the process from adding to mixing to examine water in search of cholera related bacteria’s in water.
