LAHORE: The Punjab capital city was hit by a heavy downpour on Saturday, causing widespread disruptions across the city.
A two-hour spell of intense rain transformed major roads into rivers, stranding commuters and throwing traffic into chaos. The storm also triggered a tragic incident in Old Anarkali, where a house roof collapsed, claiming the life of one person.
Accompanied by thunder and lightning, the rain left residents grappling with power outages, waterlogged streets, and gridlocked traffic. Key areas like Johar Town, Wapda Town, Gulberg, Ferozepur Road, Canal Road, and Muslim Town experienced the heaviest flooding, making many roads impassable and disrupting daily routines.
Rainfall data from the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) revealed significant downpours, with the heaviest recorded in:
Iqbal Town: 75 mm
Gulshan Ravi: 71 mm
Nishtar Town: 105 mm
Chowk Nakhda: 59 mm
Farrukhabad: 56 mm
Samanabad: 53 mm
Pani Wala Talab: 50 mm
The intense rainfall in such a short period overwhelmed the city’s drainage system, leading to urban flooding and mounting frustration among residents, who continue to face recurring issues during the monsoon season.
Deputy Director of the Meteorological Department, confirmed that the monsoon conditions will persist throughout the day, with a new weather system expected to affect Pakistan in the first week of September. So far, rainfall this season has exceeded the usual average by 12 percent.
