Legendary Pakistani wrestler, first asian games gold medalist Deen Muhammad dies at 100

LAHORE: Deen Muhammad, a legendary figure in Pakistani sports and the country’s first wrestler to win an Asian Games gold medal, has passed away at the age of 100. His son confirmed the news, and the funeral prayer is scheduled to be held tonight at 9 PM in Batapur.

Deen Muhammad etched his name in history by securing Pakistan’s inaugural gold medal at the Asian Games in 1955—an achievement that elevated Pakistan’s stature in international wrestling and brought immense pride to the nation. His triumph not only showcased his exceptional talent but also put Pakistan on the global sports map.

The nation mourned his loss, with tributes pouring in from all corners. Punjab’s Minister for Sports, Malik Faisal Ayub Khokhar, paid homage to the wrestling icon, describing him as a national hero whose contributions will be remembered forever. “Deen Muhammad’s victory lifted Pakistan’s flag high on the international stage. His legacy will inspire generations,” he remarked.

Khizr Afzal Chaudhry, Director General of Sports Punjab, also expressed heartfelt condolences, praising Deen Muhammad’s role in shaping Pakistan’s sporting history. “His dedication and success brought glory to our country, and his memory will remain a source of pride,” he said.

Leaders of the Punjab Wrestling Association, Lahore Wrestling Association, and other sports organizations also mourned his passing, praying for the departed soul and strength for his family.

Born in 1924, Deen Muhammad celebrated his centenary birthday in February this year. His extraordinary journey from humble beginnings in wrestling to standing atop the podium remains a shining chapter in Pakistan’s sporting heritage, inspiring countless athletes and sports enthusiasts alike.
