LHC Adjourns Hearing of Petition Against Hafiz Saeed Detention

Lahore (October 13, 2013): Secretary Interior appeared before a division bench of Lahore High Court hearing a petition challenging preventive detention of JuD chief Hafiz Saeed and others.

LHC allows Hafiz Saeed’s counsel to file new application against fresh detention orders.

Hafiz Saeed counsel submitted that the government had no evidence and reasons to put his client under preventive detentions. The court directed the government to present the evidence against Saeed in the court.Secretary Interior appeared before the court and said that LeT and JuD were proscribed organizations. On the instructions to produce evidences on the basis of which Saeed and his aides have been put under house arrest in the court, the Secretary Interior said that the information was sensitive in nature.

He said proposed they would show the evidence and information in his chamber.  Upon this, Justice Mazahir Ali Akbar Naqvi remarked that this should not be an attempt to waste court time and prolong the matter.

The court adjourned further hearing till tomorrow.It is to be mentioned here that Punjab Home Department last month had extended detention of Hafiz Saeed for 30 more days.

Earlier, on August 1st, Punjab government extended the house arrest of Hafiz Saeed by two months, accused by the United States of masterminding 2008 attacks on the Indian financial capital of Mumbai that killed 166 people.

Saeed was put under house arrest in January after years of living freely in Pakistan, one of the sore points in the country’s fraying relationship with the United States. His freedom had also infuriated Pakistan’s arch-foe, India.
