LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has denied bail to ex-Prime Minister and PTI leader Imran Khan in eight cases related to May 9 incidents, including the attack on Jinnah House. The decision was announced on Tuesday by a two-judge panel led by Justice Shahbaz Ali Rizvi after deliberations with both prosecution and defense teams.
As per detail, Imran Khan had submitted bail petitions for several cases filed against him following widespread protests across Pakistan on May 9, 2023, which erupted after his arrest. These protests were marked by significant violence, including attacks on military installations and destruction of public and private property.
Previously, the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) dismissed Imran’s bail requests in these cases on November 27, 2024. The protests saw PTI supporters rally nationwide, condemning Khan’s detention and demanding his release. During the unrest, demonstrators targeted notable sites such as the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi and the Lahore Corps Commander’s House, also known as Jinnah House, and caused damage to various relics honoring martyrs.
In response to the chaos, civil and military authorities vowed to impose strict penalties under applicable laws, including the Army Act, on those involved in vandalism, arson, attacks on military sites, and desecration of memorials.
Imran Khan, who was removed from office through a no-confidence vote in April 2022, has faced multiple charges, including corruption and terrorism, since his ousting. He has been in custody since August 2023, following convictions in several cases ahead of the upcoming elections scheduled for February 8.
