LHC orders crackdown on punjab University buses, addresses smog concerns

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed authorities to take action against Punjab University’s (PU) buses that are emitting smoke, in response to the rising smog problem.

During the hearing, the court instructed officials to conduct inspections of all government vehicles and to shut down any buses found releasing smoke into the environment.

The bench also noted that buses operated by Punjab University are contributing to air pollution and should be removed from the roads immediately. An environmental commission representative informed the court about ongoing issues related to tree cutting at Nasir Bagh.

The court inquired if the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) was aware of the tree removal activities. It expressed concern that despite repeated assurances, tree cutting continues, even though the government has publicly emphasized the importance of preserving trees.

Lahore Development Authority (LDA) counsel explained that an underground parking lot is planned at Nasir Bagh, which will involve relocating seven large trees. He argued that this development is essential due to ongoing parking shortages.

Justice Shahid Karim highlighted the historical importance of Nasir Bagh and mentioned that photographs depicting tree removal have been presented to the court. He also noted that the government is paying attention to environmental issues.

The court welcomed the construction of a parking facility near Neela Gumbad, calling it a positive development.
