LHC orders Punjab govt to implement law on wheat price fixation

LAHORE: Lahore High Court has issued a verdict on a petition challenging the non-setting of wheat prices.

The court has directed the Punjab government to implement the law related to the determination of wheat prices.

The court’s decision includes a report from the Department of Agriculture, which states that the cost of wheat per 40kg is Rs. 3,533. The court remarked that government institutions did not fulfil their responsibilities during the season as mandated by the constitution, nor did they consider the costs when setting the price per 40 kg

The court also noted that, according to the government’s lawyer, legislation has been enacted to determine the prices. However, small landholders and contract farmers face difficulties in this regard.

Furthermore, Lahore High Court emphasised that government agencies have acknowledged wheat as a fundamental component of food security.

It is worth mentioning that this petition was filed by the President of the Farmers’ Board on April 8, 2025, involving the federal and Punjab governments, along with other relevant institutions as parties.
