LAHORE: The Lahore High Court has deferred its verdict on a petition challenging the authority to impose a petroleum levy tax.
A two-judge bench, consisting of Justice Hassan Nawaz Makhdoom and Justice Khalid Ishaq, conducted the hearing, during which petitioner’s lawyer Azhar Siddique presented his case.
Siddique argued that, under the law, the Petroleum Development Levy Tax is a legislative matter decided by Parliament, and the Prime Minister does not have the power to impose it unilaterally. He pointed out that the Prime Minister initially set the tax at 161 rupees, later reducing it by 80 rupees.
In contrast, the federal government maintained that the petition lacks validity and asserted that the Prime Minister holds full authority to impose the levy tax.
