ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has promoted Lieutenant General Syed Aamer Raza to the rank of four-star general and appointed him as the Commander of the National Strategic Command (NSC).
Congratulating General Raza on his elevation, the prime minister expressed confidence in his leadership and wished him success in carrying out his new responsibilities.
Commissioned into the Pakistan Army’s 6th Lancers in 1988, General Raza has built an extensive military career spanning command, instructional, and staff appointments. He is an alumnus of the Command and Staff College in Quetta and the National Defence University (NDU) in Islamabad. Academically, he holds a degree in International Relations from the University of Nottingham, along with master’s qualifications in the Arts and Science of Warfare, Defence, and Strategic Studies from NDU.
During his service, General Raza commanded the 6th Lancers between 2007 and 2009 and later led an armoured brigade, an infantry brigade in South Waziristan, and an infantry division. His senior staff appointments have included Chief of Staff at II Corps and Director General of the Weapons and Equipment Directorate.
He has also contributed significantly to military education, serving as an instructor at the School of Armour and Mechanized Warfare, Director of the Faculty of Research and Doctrinal Studies, and Chief Instructor at the Command and Staff College in Quetta.
In April 2020, General Raza assumed command of Heavy Industries Taxila. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General in October 2022 and, in May 2023, took command of IV Corps Lahore following the unrest that erupted after the May 9 incidents.
His latest promotion to the rank of full general and appointment as Commander of the National Strategic Command mark another significant milestone in his military career.
