‘Many dead and injured’ in blast at bar in Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana

WEB DESK: An explosion at a bar in the upscale Alpine ski resort of Crans-Montana has claimed several lives and left many injured, according to Swiss police. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, has shocked the community and its many visitors.

Around 100 people were inside the bar, named Le Constellation, when the blast happened at approximately 1:30 am local time (0030 GMT). Gaetan Lathion, a spokesperson for the police in Wallis canton, located in southwestern Switzerland, stated that the explosion’s cause remains unknown. The bar is a popular spot for tourists, and the incident took place as people celebrated the arrival of the new year.

Lathion confirmed that multiple fatalities and injuries had been reported and emphasized the seriousness of the situation. The police have scheduled a press conference for 10 am CET to provide further updates. Meanwhile, Sion hospital has received several patients, though it has not disclosed exact numbers.

The explosion site has been completely cordoned off, with a no-fly zone established over Crans-Montana as authorities continue their investigation. Photographs published by Swiss media depict a blazing building surrounded by emergency responders.

“This is just the start of our investigation,” said Lathion. “Crans-Montana is an internationally renowned ski destination that attracts many visitors.”

Located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of the Matterhorn in the Valais canton, Crans-Montana is known for its scenic beauty and popularity among ski enthusiasts.
