Mark Carney elected as a new Prime Minister of Canada

TORONTO: Former central banker Mark Carney won the race to become leader of Canada’s ruling Liberal Party and will succeed Justin Trudeau as prime minister.

Former Governor of the Bank of England and member of Canada’s Liberal Party, Mark Carney, has been elected as the next Prime Minister of Canada, winning by a large majority in the election.

Mark Carney, the former governors of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, has no political experience compared to other candidates for the prime ministership.

During a debate last month for the Canadian prime minister election, he claimed, “I have experience in dealing with crises.”

59 years old, Carney became the first non-British person to hold the position of governor of the Bank of England when he assumed the role in 2013.

After his victory, the newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney  took a strong stance against U.S. President Donald Trump. In a speech addressing party workers following the election win.

He said, tariffs on the U.S. would remain in place until Canada is respected.

Carney mentioned that, “Donald Trump is targeting Canadian businesses, but they will not allow the U.S. President to succeed in his ambitions”.

Canada’s newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney met with outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday and vowed a quick transition.

Mark Carney said, he had a long meeting with Trudeau in which they discussed U.S.-Canada relations, national security issues and the timing of the handover in power.

“That transition will be seamless and it will be quick,” said Carney, adding there would be an announcement soon.

It is noteworthy that earlier this year, in January, Trudeau announced his intention to resign, stating that he would step down after the Liberal Party elects a new leader.

The 53-year-old Trudeau assumed the role of Prime Minister of Canada in 2015 and has since won two consecutive elections.
