DHAKA: Tens of thousands of citizens gathered in Dhaka on Saturday to pay their respects at the funeral of a prominent student activist, amid two days of chaos and protests following his death.
The funeral procession of Sharif Osman Hadi, a significant figure in last year’s pro-democracy demonstrations, drew large crowds. Hadi, who succumbed to his injuries in a Singapore hospital on Thursday after being shot by masked assailants as he left a mosque in Dhaka, was honored by many mourners.
Police officers equipped with body cameras were present outside the parliament building, where funeral prayers took place. Hadi’s body was transported to Dhaka on Friday and laid to rest at the central mosque of Dhaka University.
Interim leader Muhammad Yunus delivered an emotional address, stating, “We are not here just to say farewell. You live on in our hearts, and you will remain in the hearts of all Bangladeshis as long as the nation exists.”
Hadi, aged 32, was known for his outspoken criticism of India and was preparing to run in the upcoming general elections scheduled for February.
Iqbal Hossain Saikot, a government worker who traveled from afar to attend the funeral, claimed Hadi’s killing was rooted in his strong opposition to India. “He will continue to be remembered among the millions of Bangladeshis who love their land and cherish their sovereignty,” he added.
Hadi’s death has sparked widespread violence across the country, with protesters demanding justice and the apprehension of those responsible. On Thursday night, several buildings in Dhaka, including offices of leading newspapers Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, were set ablaze.
Critics have accused these outlets of favoring neighboring India, where Bangladesh’s former prime minister Sheikh Hasina has sought refuge since fleeing Dhaka during the 2024 protests.
Amnesty International called on Bangladesh’s interim government to ensure a thorough, independent, and impartial investigation into Hadi’s killing and the violence that ensued. The organization also expressed concern over the lynching of Hindu garment worker Dipu Chandra Das, following accusations of blasphemy.
Interim leader Yunus reported that seven individuals had been detained in connection with Das’s murder in Mymensingh district.
