ISLAMABAD: Renowned religious scholar and former Chairman of the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII), Maulana Muhammad Khan Sherani, has married for the second time at the age of 92.
The marriage ceremony was held in Islamabad in a modest setting, attended by close family members, religious scholars, and prominent personalities who conveyed their warm congratulations to the senior cleric.
His new bride is from Gilgit-Baltistan, and the nikah was conducted in accordance with Islamic principles and traditions. In an exclusive interview with ARY News, Maulana Sherani confirmed that this is his second marriage, mentioning that his first wife had passed away some time ago.
A highly respected figure in religious and political circles, Maulana Sherani has previously served as the head of the Council of Islamic Ideology and has played an influential role in shaping religious discourse in Pakistan.
He was formerly a prominent leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), but his membership was revoked by the party’s Disciplinary Committee on December 25, 2020. The decision was made unanimously by committee members Agha Ayub Shah, Maulana Abdul Wasay, and Maulana Abdul Hakeem.
Prior to his expulsion, Maulana Gul Naseeb, a former JUI-F leader from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, defended Sherani, describing him as an honest and principled individual. Naseeb expressed disappointment over the shifting standards within JUI-F, criticizing the inclusion of wealthy individuals in the party.
Following his departure from JUI-F, Maulana Sherani established a separate faction called Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Sherani (JUI-Sherani). Two years later, he announced a political and religious alliance with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), following a meeting with former Prime Minister Imran Khan at KP House in Islamabad.
During their discussion, both leaders emphasized the importance of joint efforts to counter Islamophobia and eliminate social discrimination through political and religious cooperation.
