ISLAMABAD : Renowned religious scholar Maulana Tariq Jameel deemed fatwa against the usage of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) wrong.
Talking to a private news channel, Maulana Tariq Jameel expressed concerns that fatwa against the usage of VPNs could set a precedent for prohibition of mobile phone.
“This reflects narrow-mindedness,” he stated, adding that he was unaware of any council which issued this fatwa.
The previous day, Council of Islamic Ideology (CII), headed by Dr Raghib Naeemi, issued a fatwa, declaring usage of VPNs un-Islamic (contrary to Sharia).
CII Chairman Dr Naeemi said that government has authority, from an Islamic perspective, to curb the ways that lead to vice and evil acts. It can block access to immoral content.
Dr Naeemi went on to say that the app [VPN] should be banned as it sparked controversy, provided access to blasphemous content and used against national security.
