WEB DESK:Tensions erupted among Mexican senators following a fiery debate over allegations that opposition factions called for U.S. military intervention against drug cartels.
The confrontation escalated when opposition lawmaker Alejandro Moreno, leader of the PRI party, approached the podium as the session concluded and angrily confronted Senate President Gerardo Fernandez Norona of the ruling Morena party for denying him the floor.
A video circulating on social media shows Moreno physically pushing Fernandez Norona multiple times, slapping him on the neck, and shoving another individual who attempted to intervene.
The altercation occurred amidst accusations that opposition parties PRI and PAN had called for U.S. military involvement—claims both parties deny.
Later, Fernandez Norona announced plans to file a complaint against Moreno for physical assault and to seek the removal of his legislative immunity.
He remarked, “The debate has been intense and heated… Today, when opposition legislators are exposed for their treachery, they lose control because their lies have been uncovered.” Moreno responded by accusing Fernandez Norona
