Mohsin Naqvi rejects speculations on Imran Khan’s Health

LAHORE: Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi dismissed claims on Tuesday regarding the alleged deterioration of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s eyesight, labeling them as baseless speculations. He assured that all constitutional and prison-regulated medical facilities are being provided as required.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lahore, Naqvi addressed rumors about Imran Khan’s health, particularly concerning his vision. He criticized certain media personalities for spreading exaggerated and false narratives, including allegations that Khan had completely lost vision in one eye. Naqvi categorically rejected these claims, asserting that such remarks lacked any foundation.

Naqvi confirmed that medical services offered to Imran Khan during his incarceration have been reviewed by doctors associated with the PTI leader himself and found to be satisfactory. Stressing the government’s commitment to transparency, he elaborated on efforts undertaken to ensure unbiased medical evaluations. Authorities extended an offer inviting PTI leadership to select a personal physician to oversee or confirm the assessments. Further, he mentioned the option provided to include a family representative alongside the medical team for added reassurance.

The minister disclosed that Dr. Qasim Zaman was proposed as part of this initiative, though PTI officials later requested relocating Imran Khan to a hospital for an extended stay, potentially spanning a week. However, Naqvi clarified that any such relocation would depend entirely on recommendations from doctors overseeing Khan’s medical condition.

On the political front, Naqvi addressed recent developments surrounding government-opposition dialogue. He refuted claims suggesting these discussions were kick-started in response to a letter from Mahmood Khan Achakzai, emphasizing that communication with opposition figures was already underway prior to the letter being made public. He reiterated the government’s commitment to resolving political matters through meaningful dialogue.

Touching on prison conditions, Naqvi assured that inmates, including Imran Khan, are receiving care exceeding legal requirements. To provide transparency and dispel doubts, he extended an open invitation to journalists for a firsthand inspection of jail facilities. Offering further accountability, Naqvi expressed readiness to personally accompany media representatives on such visits.

He referenced Article 15, underscoring the significance of maintaining public order and minimizing disruptions to daily life due to road closures or protests. He called on all stakeholders to prioritize the welfare of citizens by ensuring normalcy is preserved. Citing an upcoming court review scheduled for February 18, Naqvi highlighted incidents of attempted disturbances in red-zone areas, which authorities managed with restraint.

Naqvi concluded by appealing to protestors to reflect on their actions and prioritize legitimate health concerns over political objectives. He cautioned against compromising public welfare for partisan agendas during this critical juncture.
