Motorways reopen in Punjab after dust storms

LAHORE: Traffic resumed on key motorways in Punjab on Saturday after an improvement in visibility following powerful dust and wind storms that had earlier forced road closures at multiple points for public safety.

According to a spokesperson of the Motorway Police, Motorway M2, which was closed from Thokar Niaz Beg to Kot Momin, and Motorway M3, which was shut from Faizpur to Darkhana, have both been reopened to traffic.

The Lahore–Sialkot Motorway was also affected and temporarily closed due to poor visibility caused by the intense weather.“The motorways were closed to ensure public safety and to prevent accidents during the storm,” the spokesperson said, adding that the decision was taken as a precautionary measure during severe weather conditions.

Strong winds and overcast skies turned the weather pleasant across Lahore, with dark clouds plunging the city into daytime darkness. Thunderstorms and heavy winds have affected multiple districts of Punjab. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued alerts to all Deputy Commissioners and rescue services across the province.

Moreover, four people, including a woman, have been killed and over 10 others injured after strong winds caused walls and trees to collapse in Jhelum and Sheikhupura.
