MINNEAPOLIS: A shooting took place on Wednesday at a Catholic school in Minneapolis during the first week of the new academic year, according to Minnesota officials. While there are currently no confirmed details regarding injuries, Governor Tim Walz described the incident as “horrific.”
The Minneapolis city authorities stated that the suspect had been “contained” following the gunfire at Annunciation School, which is associated with a church, and emphasized that there is no ongoing “active threat” to the public.
Governor Tim Walz shared on social media that he had been briefed about the situation. “My thoughts are with our students and teachers, whose first week back to school was overshadowed by this tragic act of violence,” he posted on X.
A contact at Annunciation School mentioned that students were being evacuated from the premises. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including local police, state authorities, and federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, responded swiftly to the scene.
Founded in 1923, the school serves pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. According to its website, the school had scheduled an all-school Mass at 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday. The first day of school had been on Monday, and photos shared on social media depict students in green uniforms greeting each other, smiling, and sitting together at bicycle racks.
This recent shooting is part of a troubling pattern of gun-related violence in Minneapolis, which has seen multiple fatal incidents over the past 24 hours. On Tuesday afternoon, a shooting outside a high school resulted in one death and six injuries. Later that day, two additional shootings in the city claimed two lives.
