WEB DESK: Once a trailblazer in social networking, MySpace is signaling a potential revival after nearly 20 years, stirring excitement among tech enthusiasts and former users alike. The revival plans are highlighted in a new documentary titled “Myspace,” where founders Tim and Chris Vanderhook reveal their vision for a relaunch of the iconic platform.
Originally launched in 2003 by Tom Anderson and Chris DeWolfe, MySpace reached its peak around 2008 with approximately 115 million monthly users. The platform was famous for its vibrant, customizable profiles, embedding music, and the famous “Top 8” friends list, along with “Tom,” the first friend for many users. Despite its early success, it was eventually eclipsed by Facebook and considered a nostalgic relic of the early internet era.
The Vanderhook brothers, who acquired MySpace from its founders for $35 million through their firm Specific Media (now Viant Technology), are now positioning themselves as custodians of the brand, aiming for a comeback at an opportune moment. Their previous attempt to revive MySpace in 2013 resulted in significant financial losses, exceeding $150 million.
Industry analyst Kate Winick from Forrester notes that renewed interest in platforms like MySpace aligns with a larger shift toward smaller, less algorithm-dependent social spaces such as Substack and Discord. However, she cautions that today’s core demographic—millennials—may not have much affinity for a platform that was once a youth staple.
To succeed this time around, experts suggest focusing on engaging Generation Z and Generation Alpha, who are more receptive to innovative social experiences. Recent data underscores this trend, with platforms like Bluesky experiencing a 40% decline in daily users after an initial surge in 2024, and BeReal’s user base shrinking from 20 million to approximately 16 million post-pandemic.
The challenge for MySpace will be to modernize its appeal while tapping into the preferences of younger generations eager for fresh, less commercialized social media options.
