ISLAMABAD: The Standing Committee on Interior of the National Assembly has unanimously rejected a proposed bill to ban dowry.
During a recent session led by Chairman Karam Niaz, the committee reviewed the bill introduced by MNA Sharmila Farooqi, which aimed to criminalize dowry and impose penalties for violations. The legislation also included provisions permitting parents to voluntarily give gifts to their children.
Despite the intentions behind the bill, the committee members collectively decided that the legislation was impractical and, therefore, unsuitable for enactment. The decision marks a significant setback for efforts to curb the dowry system through legislative measures.
