NA unanimously passes resolution seeking peaceful settlement of Kashmir dispute

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Tuesday unanimously adopted a resolution calling for a just, peaceful and lasting settlement of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in line with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

The resolution was jointly moved by Minister for Kashmir Affairs Engineer Amir Muqam and Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir Rana Muhammad Qasim Noon.

It urged the international community, particularly the United Nations, to fulfil its obligations towards the people of Jammu and Kashmir, take concrete measures to implement relevant UN Security Council resolutions and hold India accountable for alleged human rights violations in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

The House reaffirmed Pakistan’s continued moral, political and diplomatic support for the Kashmiri people and their struggle for the realisation of their legitimate rights.

Paying tribute to generations of Kashmiris for their courage, resilience and sacrifices, the resolution strongly condemned what it described as continuing grave and systematic human rights violations in the occupied territory.

It also rejected India’s unilateral actions of August 5, 2019, and subsequent measures, which the resolution said sought to change the internationally recognised disputed status and demographic composition of Jammu and Kashmir.

The resolution called on India to end human rights violations, halt measures aimed at changing the territory’s demographic character, release Kashmiri leaders from detention and allow international human rights organisations and independent observers unrestricted access to the region.

It further maintained that the final status of Jammu and Kashmir must be determined in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the freely expressed wishes of the Kashmiri people.

The National Assembly urged the government to continue diplomatic efforts at the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and other international forums to highlight the dispute and advocate the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination.

Reaffirming its solidarity with Kashmiris, the House pledged to continue raising its voice for their fundamental rights, dignity and right to self-determination.
