NADRA introduced Pakistan’s first digital identity card

ISLAMABAD: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has launched Pakistan’s first ‘Dematerialized Digital Identity Card’, marking a major milestone in the country’s digital identity transformation.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who attended the event, lauded the initiative, calling it a groundbreaking step towards modernizing the national identity system. He announced that the digital ID feature would soon be integrated into the Pak ID mobile app, enabling citizens to store their identity cards on their smartphones.

The ceremony at NADRA headquarters featured the unveiling of a commemorative coin by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), a special postage stamp by Pakistan Post, and a book documenting NADRA’s 25-year journey.

A digital verification system, part of the World Bank-backed Digital Economy Project, is set to launch its pilot phase on Independence Day 2025. This system is expected to enhance secure identity verification for both citizens and government services.

Minister Naqvi also emphasized NADRA’s commitment to expanding identity services to remote areas and overseas Pakistanis, while also supporting law enforcement agencies in national security matters.

The launch of the digital identity card is seen as a game-changer, simplifying access to public services and ensuring a more secure, efficient, and modernized national identity system.
