Nai Gaj Dam Case: SC Summons Sindh Chief Secretary On May 23

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court on Thursday by expressing anger towards provincial government summoned Sindh Chief Secretary on May 23.

A three-member bench of the SC headed by Justice Azmat Saeed heard a case pertaining to the construction of Nai Gaj Dam.

The court during the hearing in its remarks said that the chief secretary should record his statement regarding the construction of Nai Gaj Dam.

“If the people of the Sindh province do not want water, it is their choice,” Justice Azmat Saeed observed during the hearing.

Justice Azmat Saeed expressed anger towards the Sindh government and said, “We know that which districts of the province the Sindh government wants to flood. Does the Sindh government want us to reveal those names in the court?

“The chief secretary should record a statement in the court stating that there is no need of water in Dadu,” he further added.

“Once the chief secretary will record his statement, the court will then review its decision,” said Justice Saeed.

“It is possible that we will review our orders regarding the construction of the Nai Gaj Dam. The court can no longer bear the weight of this,” he added.

Justice Ijazul Ahsan of the SC remarked that the provincial government has now refused to accept the decision of Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC). “The cost of the construction of the dam keeps rising with the passage of time,” he said, adding, “The previous cost of the project was Rs26 billion. Now it has risen to Rs46 billion.”

The court then adjourned the case’s hearing till May 23.
