Nawaz Sharif to join PML-N campaign in Azad Jammu, Kashmir ahead of elections

WEB DESK: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif has decided to actively participate in the party’s election campaign for the upcoming Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) polls and is expected to visit the region in mid-June, according to party sources.

Sources said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz are also likely to campaign in different parts of AJK during the election season.

Party insiders revealed that Nawaz Sharif instructed both leaders to take part in campaign activities within the legal framework, with several public rallies expected to be organised across the territory in June.

The development came after the PML-N parliamentary board completed interviews of candidates seeking party tickets for the AJK elections during a meeting held at the party secretariat in Lahore.

Senior party figures, including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, attended the session alongside Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz.

According to party sources, more than 206 hopefuls from 45 constituencies appeared before the board as part of the ticket distribution process. Candidates were questioned about their political performance, constituency influence and commitment to the party.

Earlier, the prime minister had constituted a nine-member political committee consisting of federal ministers and AJK leaders to oversee party affairs and coordinate preparations for the regional elections.

The committee reportedly held consultations with prospective candidates in various divisions of AJK as well as with Kashmiri refugee representatives in Rawalpindi.

With AJK elections scheduled for July, the party has now entered the formal phase of candidate scrutiny and campaign planning, aiming to strengthen its position ahead of the polls.
