NDMA issues weather warning for heavy rain, flooding in the coming days

ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall and potential flooding across several regions over the next week, particularly affecting the northern and central parts of the country from August 5 to August 8.

According to the NDMA, there is a moderate to high risk of flooding along the Chenab River, including areas such as Marala, Khanki, and Qadirabad. Similarly, the Jhelum River, especially the upper regions of Mangla, is also expected to face flood threats. The flow of the Kabul River is likely to increase at Nowshera, and streams in Swat and Panjkora are at risk of flooding.

In addition, sudden flood conditions may occur in Gilgit-Baltistan, particularly in Hunza, Ghanche, and Shigar districts, due to expected rainfall. Currently, the water levels at Tarbela, Kalabagh, Chashma, Taunsa, and Guddu Barrages are low, but moderate flows are anticipated in the coming days. The ongoing monsoon rains have resulted in Tarbela Dam being filled to 94%, while Mangla Dam is at 64% capacity.

Authorities are advised to prepare dewatering equipment and pumps for efficient drainage in urban areas of northeastern and central Punjab. The NDMA will continue to provide updates regarding potential threats and has urged relevant agencies to stay vigilant and implement precautionary measures.Residents are cautioned to avoid unnecessary travel in flood-prone or restricted zones and to stay clear of rivers, bridges, and flooded roads during periods of high water flow. Local authorities and agencies are instructed to keep machinery and pumps ready for immediate deployment to manage lowland flooding.
